A scholar of Jewish Studies and Religious Studies, Steven Weitzman serves as the Abraham M. Ellis Professor at the University of Pennsylvania and as the Ella Darivoff Director of the Katz Center for Advanced Judaic Studies. His talk will draw on his recent book The Origin of the Jews: the Quest for Roots in a Rootless Age (Princeton University Press), which is a recipient of a National Jewish Book Award.
About the talk: Science has discovered a kind of historical archive hiding within the human cell-a trove of information about the ancestors of present-day Jews. This talk will explore what geneticists have been learning about ancient Jewish ancestry, and why some scholars are very critical of this kind of research.
