Join Rabbi Ain, Jeremiah Lockwood and Ravid Kahalani for LISTEN Friday Night at Congregation Beth Sholom.
Ravid Kahalani is the founder of internationally acclaimed world-beat band Yemen Blues. Born in Israel, Kahalani mines his Yemeni heritage for inspiration, but as the New York Daily News notes Yemen Blues “hardly limits itself to music from the Arabian Peninsula. As half their name tips off, there's a strong influence from U.S. blues, as well as soul and funk. To this, they add hard beats from West Africa and wild quavers from North Africa — specifically the gnawa culture of Morocco.” We are fortunate to have Ravid take part in the Listen series while he is in the Bay Area as an Asylum Arts Fellow. Curator Jeremiah Lockwood will accompany Ravid for this unique event.
DATE: Friday, January 18
TIME: 6:30 p.m., Kiddush to follow.
PLACE: Gronowski Family Chapel
COST: Free! All are welcome.
Curated by musician and scholar Jeremiah Lockwood, Listen is a liturgical music series that will help us explore these questions in the context of a unique Friday evening service. Jeremiah will call upon world-renowned musicians working in diverse genres to present profound and soulful musical experiences. Listen will offer an opportunity to engage in deep listening, hear virtuosic performances, and learn about sacred music traditions—both our own Jewish traditions and those of the people we share homelands with today and in other periods in our history.
