Rooted in our core values of Torah, tefillah (prayer), and community, our Shabbat School program prioritizes Shabbat as the center of Jewish life. Our model familiarizes students with Torah through study of each week’s parsha, or portion, and provides in-depth knowledge and familiarity with each component of the Shabbat morning service. Through our innovative and engaging curriculum, our students are better prepared to become bar or bat mitzvah and for a lifetime of meaningful Jewish connection.

Our Shabbat School model was launched in 2011 for children in Kindergarten through b’nai mitzvah. This change from the more common “Sunday School” approach was the result of thoughtful research and much discussion about how we could most effectively deliver a curriculum powerfully rooted in our core values.

While children attend Shabbat School, parents are able to participate in adult education, traditional prayer, family-centered Shabbat services, or other alternative Shabbat activities on campus. At noon on Shabbat, parents and children are encouraged to join the rest of the community for a delicious and joyful kiddush in Koret Hall.

CBS Shabbat School strives to:

  • Support parents in the mitzvah of teaching our children.
  • Teach middot (Jewish values) through Torah study, personal reflection, and acts of Tikkun Olam.
  • Create powerful Shabbat and holiday experiences with the greater CBS community.
  • Teach our children to pray as Jews.
  • Cultivate an awareness of God in nature and in human relationships.
  • Provide the tools to lead an engaged Jewish life in our modern world.
