Take Us Out To The Ball Game!

ChristopherOrevReigerNoahPhilippDaleKleisleyKatherineFreidmanBarboniAdinahRatner_SFGiantsJewishHeritageNight_August2016It's that time of the year again!

CBS invites you to join your fellow congregants and other members of the Bay Area Jewish community for San Francisco Giants Jewish Heritage Night on Monday, August 21.

This annual celebration of Jewish identity and heritage is always a home run of fun, and this year the fellas in black and orange need our cheers more than ever! Our beloved Giants are struggling to keep their post-season aspirations alive, and our supportive voices are needed to help Buster, Madison, and company take on a group of Midwestern beer makers (a.k.a., the Milwaukee Brewers) in what may well be an important late-season game.

We'll be sitting in Lower Box Section 135 (Left Field), with an unimpeded view of all the on-field action. This year, as last, we're offering two ticket packages.

The $36 event package includes:
- 1 seat in the CBS section (Lower Box 135 - Left Field) for the game (begins at 7:15 p.m.)
- A collector's-edition, Lou Seal bobble head with a shofar (produced by the SF Giants)
- Admission to the Jewish Heritage Night Pregame Party, 5 - 7 p.m. in Parking Lot A, just across McCovey Cove. (Live entertainment and food/drink specials will be available for purchase during the pregame party, with proceeds partially benefiting local charitable programs in the Jewish community.)

The $50 event package includes:
- All of the above, plus one of our CBS community spirit t-shirts! (See front and back of shirt below. Click on the image to see a larger view.)

Community Purim Carnival
& Spiel To Support CBS Educational Programs

Sunday, March 12
11 a.m. - 4 p.m.
Koret Hall, CBS campus

Carnival: 11 a.m. – 2 p.m.
Long Live The Spiel!: 2 - 3 p.m.
Megillah reading: 3 – 4 p.m.

Political intrigue, unrestrained vanity and ego, misogyny, revenge fantasies – are we talking about the Purim story or today's headlines? During this topsy-turvy time, Purim takes on special resonance.

Join the CBS community on March 12 to celebrate a world turned upside down!

There will be carnival games, a bounce house, a dance-off, delicious food prepared by CBS Executive Chef Jane Sykes, two raffles with amazing prizes, a silent auction, a performance by youth band, Planet 17, an interactive megillah reading, and booze aplenty! This year, however, we're also producing an original CBS Purim spiel musical featuring a cast and crew of members and adapted lyrics and music from the famous musical, Les Miserables. Long Live The Spiel! : The Exciting Story of Esther to the Music of "Les Misérables" will be performed in the CBS Sanctuary.

We will also have a Music & Movement Room designed for children three years of age and younger. This special activity is sponsored by the San Francisco Jewish Baby Network and PJ Library. Popular Bay Area songster Jonathan Bayer will be playing music in the room and we will have lots of books from PJ Library on hand for your kiddos to enjoy. (A one-time entry fee of $3 includes "in and out" privileges for the rest of the day!)

It's going to be an absolute blast...and it's for a great cause! All proceeds from the fundraiser will be used to support and enhance CBS youth education programming: the CBS Family Preschool, Shabbat School, and USY teen activities. We look forward to seeing you (or Esther or Hodor or Simone Biles) there!

General admission is free, but you will need to purchase $1 "activity tickets" to exchange for games, food, and drinks. Activity tickets will be available for sale the day of the event only. Raffle tickets are available for pre-sale -- scroll down to buy -- as well as during PURIMPALOOZA.

We're also looking for day-of volunteers to help out at the many different game stations, bartending, food service, raffle ticket sales, etc. Please click here to sign up for a spot or spots. Thank you!

CBS Does Jewish Heritage Night

Nathaniel&SamTeitelbaumEllaLaelSturm_SFGiantsJewishHeritageNight_August2016Every year, sometime in late July or August, Bay Area Jews from all walks of life descend on AT&T Park for what just might become our fourth Pilgrimage Festival. The annual ingathering of the Jews known as San Francisco Giants Jewish Heritage Night is always a great deal of fun, and last night was no exception.

Over 70 CBS congregants and friends participated in the 2016 Jewish Heritage Night (Tuesday, August 30), and many came well before the first pitch to check out the pregame celebration at the north end of Terry Francois Boulevard, just across McCovey Cove (best known for kayakers retrieving "splash hits," home runs hit over the right field wall into the water). Some stalwart Jewish organizations working in the Bay Area, including PJ Library, the Jewish Community Federation, Reboot, and Keshet, set up information tables at the party, and, as always, our Chabadnik brothers patrolled the crowd looking for Jews – all men, per their take on halacha (Jewish law) – to lay tefillin. The popular Rally Rabbi blew the shofar to announce Rosh Hashanah's approach (it may be a month away, but it's always good for the soul to hear the blast of "Tekiah"!), and a handful of bands performed for all assembled.

Sadly, our Giants fell to the Arizona Diamondbacks in a close game (4-3). Still, any evening at the ballpark is a treat, and knowing that a good segment of the crowd is composed of fellow yidden and their family and friends is a great reason to smile, as so many of us did.

Thanks to all who participated this year and to the Giants for putting the event on. Next year, at AT&T Park again...and may we win!

A selection of photographs snapped during the event are included below. Visit our Facebook page for more photos.

We're Going To The Ball Game!

Facebook_HeritageNightTShirt_FrontIt's that time of the year again! CBS invites you to join your fellow congregants and other members of the Bay Area Jewish community for San Francisco Giants Jewish Heritage Night on Tuesday, August 30. This annual celebration of Jewish identity and heritage is always a home run of fun, but this year is going to be extra special!

Our beloved Giants will be taking on some Southwestern serpents (a.k.a., the Arizona Diamondbacks) in a divisional game. Instead of nosebleed seats, we have reserved a block of amazing, Club Level seats! What's so great about Club Level? Just behind these seats is an open area with a wide variety of restaurants, food stands, and bars. (Some of this area is enclosed; if you get chilly, you can go inside to warm up.) There's also a Giants Museum with a variety of memorabilia on display. The museum and food-bar area are only accessible from the Club, Field Club, and luxury seat areas, which reduces the likelihood of a food or beverage run mob scene.

This year, we're also offering two ticket packages.

The $65 event package includes:
- 1 seat in the CBS section (Club Level 230) for the game (begins at 7:15 p.m.)
- A collector's-edition, Jewish-themed Giants hat
- Admission to the Jewish Heritage Night Pregame Party, 5 - 7 p.m. on Terry Francois Boulevard. (Live entertainment and food/drink specials will be available for purchase during the pregame party, with proceeds partially benefiting local charitable programs in the Jewish community.)

The $80 event package includes:
- All of the above, plus one of our CBS Jewish Heritage Night t-shirts! (See front and back of shirt below. You can click on the image to see a larger view.)

Jacob Goode's Bar Mitzvah

JacobGoodeI’m Jacob Goode, a seventh grader at Claire Lilienthal in San Francisco. I enjoy learning, playing baseball and golf, watching the Giants and Warriors, hanging out with my friends and playing video games, and traveling the world with my family. In fact, my family and I have recently returned from a trip to Israel, which has helped put my bar mitzvah in perspective. I have a greater appreciation for our long history.

I am very excited that this Shabbat is my bar mitzvah. This week’s Torah portion is Parashat Emor. The text outlines the Jewish festivals, holy days, and some of the Jewish laws and rituals. Parashat Emor concludes by describing an incident in which a man is accused of blasphemy. The text then provides the principle of lex talionis, "ayin tachat ayin, shein tachat shein" (literally, an "eye for an eye; tooth for a tooth"). I’m looking forward to sharing this day with friends, family, and members of the community, whom I hope shall end Shabbat with good sight and fully dentured.

I’d like to thank my amazing tutor, Noa, who helped me learn this week’s haftarah, the maftir for this week’s Torah portion, the blessings before and after the readings, and the Torah service in such a short time. I’d also like to thank our B'nai Mitzvah Chavurah for their support and friendship. I’d like to thank Rabbis Glazer and Hyman, and my CBS Shabbat School teacher, Elizabeth Andrews. And a very special thanks to my family (the Chikhanis and the Goodes), for being there every step of the way, for always supporting me, encouraging me, and schlepping me to where I wanted to be.
