Yom Ha'Atzmaut is independence day in Israel, marked on the Hebrew
calendar on the 5th of Iyar. It celebrates the end of the British
mandate on May 14, 1948, and the declaration of indepence by the state
of Israel. In Israel, this day follows Yom Ha'Zikaron, the memorial day
established for those who perished in Israel's War of Independence
and in the conflicts that have followed. This Israeli holiday thus
completes a season of remembrance that begins with Yom haShoah, and
connects our modern celebrations with our most terrible modern
tragedies.
At
Beth Sholom, these days are an opportunity to connect oneself with the
unfolding of modern Jewish history, and the quest for peace that
continues in our time.
