One of Beth Sholom's most successful tzedakah programs is the Hessed
Fund, which is used to provide food and housing to the needy in San
Francisco, within the Jewish community as well as the community at
large. All families and individuals who are having any kind of a simcha
are encouraged to make a voluntary contribution to the Hessed Fund
equal to three percent of the cost of the celebration. Some B'nai
Mitzvah have donated a portion of their gifts to this fund (the same
three percent, or more), in addition to a family contribution.
This practice is an excellent means of making sure that becoming a bar
or bat mitzvah expresses a sense of responsibility to other human
beings. It is very much in keeping with our tradition to have a festive
celebration upon the completion of such a mitzvah. It is also an
important aspect of our tradition that we take advantage of all such
celebrations as occasions for remembering our obligations to care for
those in need. More information is available through our office; please
